Electricity & Circuits Workshop

This workshop will introduce primary school children to electricity and circuits by interacting with and building with Snap Circuits.

The workshop will cover the following objectives from the national curriculum in Science:

  • identify common appliances that run on electricity

  • construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers

  • identify whether or not a lamp will light in a simple series circuit, based on whether or not the lamp is part of a complete loop with a battery

  • recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit

  • recognise some common conductors and insulators, and associate metals with being good conductors

Challenges can include the use of resistors (various ohms), alarms, speakers, buzzers, switches (buttons and sliders), motors and fans amongst others.

The workshop is easily adaptable and can be differentiated for SEN learners and Gifted and Talented learners.

Expected outcomes

Students will progress from building simple circuits with a working bulb, to building parallel circuits with bulbs, working motors, switches, resistors, speakers, sensors and many more components.

Students will feel confident enough to design and draw their own working circuits.
